Pursuant to the SAVE law, all individuals seeking employment in a school setting and all applicants for certification must undergo a fingerprint-supported criminal history background check. The Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability (OSPRA) of the New York State Education Department manages this process.

Candidates will be reimbursed by the District for fingerprints once employed and working for the District. More information about this process is available on the state education department website.

Current Opportunities

  • Distinguishing Features of the Class:

    This work involves responsibility for driving a school bus on an assigned route.  The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe transfer of school children and maintaining discipline on the bus.  The work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor in accordance with established policies and procedures, with wide leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.  Does related work as required.

    Typical Work Activities:

    -       Operates a school bus on a regular schedule and special trips;

    -       Checks the operating condition of the bus before and after each trip using a checklist to ensure tires, lights, brakes, wipers, etc. are in working order;

    -       Reports any operational defects to the immediate supervisor;

    -       Maintains orderly conduct of children on the bus;

    -       Keeps interior and exterior of bus clean and neat;

    -       Informs children about safety regulations and practices;

    -       Maintains records of mileage, routes, times and incidents;

    -       Prepares and maintains maps of routes and pick-up points;

    -       May be required to perform minor maintenance tasks such as filling gasoline tanks, placing chains on wheels, changing fuses, checking oil, water, belts, etc.

    Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

    Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; Ability to operate a bus under difficult driving or hazardous road conditions; Ability to get along well with children and command their respect; Ability to maintain discipline of children riding the bus; Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; Mechanical aptitude; Mental alertness; Dependability; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

    Minimum Qualifications: Either:

    Eligibility for CDL Class B with passenger endorsement license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of application. Possession of license at the time of appointment.  Drivers must be at least 21 years of age.

    Special Requirements:

    Candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.

  • Distinguishing Features of the Class:

    The work involves responsibility for the efficient and economical cleaning and maintenance of a building on an assigned shift.  Work is performed under general supervision with some leeway for the use of independent judgment in keeping the building up to approved standards of cleanliness and operation.  Supervision may be exercised over the work of Cleaners.  Does related work as required.

     

    Typical Work Activities:

    • Sweeps, mops, and waxes floors; washes walls, windows, and blackboards; cleans erasers, dusts, and performs other cleaning duties
    • Cleans and mops lavatories and locker rooms and replaces soap or towels
    • Dust desks, woodwork, furniture, and other equipment
    • Makes minor repairs to furniture, electrical fixtures, windows, window shades, locks, faucets, heating system, and other equipment
    • Empties wastebaskets, collects and disposes of rubbish
    • Assists in the operation of an oil or gas-fired, low-pressure steam, hot water, or hot air heating system;
    • Receives, moves, and stores incoming supplies
    • Arranges chairs, tables, and other equipment for special use of the building
    • Performs a variety of errands and related custodial tasks
    • May mow lawns, trim shrubs, rake leaves, remove snow and ice from walks and driveways, and perform a variety of other groundskeeping tasks as assigned

     

    Full Performance Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment, and ability to use them economically and efficiently; working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of building heating equipment; ability to make minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs and perform a variety of routine maintenance tasks; ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with others; willingness to perform custodial and other manual tasks; thoroughness; dependability; ability to meet the physical demands of the position.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    One year of experience in building cleaning or minor maintenance activities.

  • Distinguishing Features of the Class:

    This is routine manual work performed under immediate supervision in connection with the preparation and serving of food and maintaining the sanitary condition of the kitchen and equipment.  Food Service Helpers may occasionally perform cooking duties involving lesser degrees of skill than regularly required of employees in the classification of Cook. Food Service Helpers will do related work as required.

     

    Typical Work Activities:

    • Serves food, sets tables, and clears them after meals
    • Fills sugar bowls and salt and pepper shakers
    • Polishes silverware, tables, and chairs
    • Cleans dish and linen closets
    • Cleans, washes, and otherwise prepares vegetables and fruit for cooking
    • Assists in the preparation of salads and desserts
    • Washes dishes, pots, and pans by hand or machine
    • Sweeps, mops, and cleans kitchen and dining hall
    • May act as a relief cook
    • May act as cashier

     

    Full Performance Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Working knowledge of the proper methods of serving food and of the care of tableware, glassware, silver, and kitchen appliances; practical working knowledge of modern cleaning methods and the use of cleaning supplies and appliances; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to meet the physical demands of the position.

  • Distinguishing Features of the Class:

    The purpose of this position is to assist School Teachers with the part of their non-instructional duties that relate to the teaching process. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the teacher(s) responsible for the student’s instruction.

     

    Typical Work Activities:

    • Assists teachers in the correction of test papers, recording of grades, maintaining of files, and preparation of statistical reports
    • Assists teachers with study hall, corridor, lunchroom, and other monitorial duties
    • Fills out, copies or types forms, reports, etc., from rough drafts
    • Assists in routine classroom maintenance chores
    • Prepares materials for classroom projects, bulletin boards, media programs, and related activities
    • Monitors the practice/seat work assigned in the presence of a certified teacher
    • May be responsible for setting up and supervising the computer, science, and language labs
    • May shelve returned books, records, magazines, and other reference materials in a library setting
    • May type and file catalog cards, correspondence, and other reports
    • May issue and collect audiovisual equipment and reading materials and instruct students in their use
    • May work in the publishing center, preparing booklets for classes

     

    Full Performance Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Good general intelligence; familiarity with classroom routines; ability to establish good relationships with students, teachers, and coworkers; ability to communicate effectively; ability to establish and maintain discipline, tact, courtesy, and dependability; good judgment; ability to meet the physical demands of the position.

Substitutes

Per Diem Teacher Substitutes
The daily substitute teacher rate is $131 per day for certified teachers and $114 per day for non-certified teachers. Retired teachers will be paid $142 per day. Regular substitutes are paid daily rates for the first twenty (20) days of continuous service. On the twenty-first day, they are paid a daily rate commensurate with their step on the Oneida Teachers' Association Salary Schedule. They shall be paid only for the days they work. They do not receive pay for holidays nor do they receive sick leave or personal leave benefits per contract.

Substitute nurses
The daily substitute nurse rate is $119 per day. Retired nurses will be paid $139 per day.

 Procedure (per diem teacher sub, sub teaching assistant/aide, and sub nurse)
1. Complete the substitute application and submit by mail to OCSD, 565 Sayles Street, Oneida, NY 13421
2. An interview is required. Oneida interviews when needed based on its current pool of substitutes.  Candidates are notified via phone to schedule interviews as needed.
3. A reference check is conducted following the interview.

 If recommended as a substitute:

  • Fingerprint-supported criminal history background check and clearance from the New York State Department of Education, if not already completed through another district.  More information is available below.
  • Board of Education appointment.

 

Long-term Substitutes
Long-term substitutes are those substitutes assigned to replace teachers who are ill or on leave of absence for one semester or longer. They shall be paid according to the Oneida Teachers' Association salary contract. These substitutes would receive a proration of benefits per the Oneida Teachers' Association contract.
