Where Are They Now: Dr. Heather (Maisey) Buschman

Where Are They Now?
Introducing Dr. Heather (Maisey) Buschman, a distinguished alumna of Oneida City School District, Class of 1998.
One of Heather's most memorable experiences at OCSD was her participation in a powerful mock accident demonstration on the OHS front lawn, organized in collaboration with Students Against Drunk Driving prior to prom. The event, which included the involvement of a rescue helicopter, left a lasting impact on students and underscored the importance of making safe choices.
After graduating, Heather pursued a bachelor's degree in biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, followed by a PhD in molecular pathology at the University of California, San Diego.
Although Heather initially aspired to be a scientist, she ultimately discovered her true passion in science communication—developing innovative ways to make science accessible to diverse audiences. She currently serves as the head of the Communications Department at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. Under her leadership, her team utilizes digital and print communications, social media, media outreach, design, and illustration to engage the public in Salk’s pioneering research in neuroscience, cancer, plant biology, and more.
To future graduates, Healther offers this advice: "Just because you start out doing one thing doesn't mean it has to be forever. There are many different paths. Say yes to new opportunities because you never know what you'll discover!"
