Vietnam Veteran, Michael Klopotek Visits OHS

Mrs. McKay invited her father, Vietnam Veteran Michael Klopotek, to speak to her High School English classes, providing students with a unique opportunity to gain insight into the life of a military service member.
She began the class with compelling background information about her father and her experiences as the daughter of a military man. Mr. Klopotek served as a Staff Sergeant (E6) and was a tank commander during six years of his service, ultimately retiring as a Major after 20 years.
"The Army was where my dad shined. He was like a diamond in the rough. The leaders noticed my dad's determination, mental strength, and ability to explain things with detail, precision, and patience."
During a captivating Q&A session, Mr. Klopotek shared memories from his time in the Vietnam War, emphasizing the importance of education both in and out of the military. He highlighted that advancement in the military is often contingent upon continuing education, which he pursued at Eastern Kentucky University, where he earned a degree in Political Science.
He provided insightful perspectives on wartime culture, leadership dynamics, and the current political climate. Mr. Klopotek stressed the importance of effective leadership, emphasizing that the primary responsibility of military leaders is to complete the mission while prioritizing the welfare of their personnel. He always believed in putting his men first and the mission second, stating, “Without the men, you can’t complete the mission.”
To engage the students further, he brought a tank missile replica, along with historical photographs and tank models. He also candidly discussed his personal struggles with PTSD and cancer as a result of Agent Orange exposure.
Mr. Klopotek recounted the plane ride home from Vietnam, describing it as “dead quiet” until the plane landed, prompting an eruption of excitement among the soldiers.
Reflecting on his military experience, he stated that it met his expectations. His message to the students was clear: work hard, study diligently, and strive to be effective leaders. He also noted that while a military background can enhance a resume, it is ultimately a personal decision that requires careful consideration of the commitment involved.
Mrs. McKay emphasized the various opportunities available within the military as well.
"When you are out of options and need guidance, the military can really guide someone, but you need to know what you're getting into. And its level and responsibility."
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Klopotek for his dedicated service and for generously sharing his time with us.
