Morning Moving Initiative at Seneca Street
The Morning Moving initiative at Seneca Street Elementary has achieved remarkable success since its implementation by Principal Mr. Coriale, Physical Education Teacher Mr. D’Arcangelis, and Occupational Therapist Mrs. Gaudet. Each morning, teachers, staff, and students engage in a 10-minute moving session to energize their minds and bodies for the day ahead.
To maintain student interest and excitement, the activities change daily. These activities include walking the halls, taking a walk around the campus, tug of war, relay races, and more, as part of the Morning Moving Initiative.
Mrs. Gaudet states, “It’s a simple concept with big results.”
Today’s students spend considerable time in front of screens; incorporating daily movement aims to foster healthy habits that students can carry into their lives outside of school, ultimately reducing screen time.
Movement also positively impacts behavior and cognitive functions. Physical activity increases oxygen to vital parts of the brain in preparation for learning. Routine and repetition also help to encourage students to get to school on time and be excited for the day. These are just some of the reasons why movement is so important for our students.
Mr. D’Arcangelis also hopes that students will discuss the Morning Moving initiative with their families, inspiring entire households to adopt this beneficial home routine.
