New OSMS Principal

We are pleased to introduce Mrs. Michelle Taranto as the new principal of Otto Shortell Middle School! Ms. Mandi Larson will assume the role as the chair of the Committee on Special Education (CSE).
Mrs. Taranto possesses a Bachelor of Science in Adolescent Education and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in History, complemented by a minor in Economics, all from SUNY Oswego. She further enhanced her credentials by earning a Master of Science in Adolescent Special Education from The College of Saint Rose and obtaining an Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership from SUNY Fredonia.
Before becoming part of the Oneida City School District, Mrs. Taranto gained extensive experience in the field of education. She was a special education teacher and team leader at the Clinton Central School District, where she also coordinated summer school programs. Additionally, Mrs. Taranto completed her administrative internships at both the building and district levels, focusing on middle school and district operations.
Her teaching journey has taken her through various educational environments, including Richfield Springs, Afton, and Orlando, Florida. In these roles, she worked in diverse special education settings, ranging from self-contained classrooms to co-taught environments. These varied experiences have significantly influenced her approach to inclusive leadership and commitment to instructional excellence. By understanding the unique needs of students in different contexts, Mrs. Taranto is equipped to foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment for all.
Mrs. Taranto possesses a profound dedication to empowering students to achieve their fullest potential, with a particular focus on those who learn differently. Her career commenced in special education, where she recognized the vital importance of individualized support, advocacy, and building meaningful connections. As her experience grew, she identified a desire to extend her impact beyond the classroom and influence the wider school community. Transitioning into a leadership role emerged as a natural progression, enabling her to collaborate effectively with students, educators, and families to foster a supportive and inclusive educational environment.
She is eager to cultivate strong relationships with students, families, and staff to collaboratively foster a culture of support, high expectations, and accountability, enabling our students to thrive and achieve success. Oneida’s dedication to educating, inspiring, and empowering all students resonates deeply with my values, and I am committed to ensuring that every student at Otto Shortell Middle School feels valued, supported, and adequately challenged.
Outside of her professional commitments, Mrs. Taranto values time spent with family and friends. She is a dedicated mother of three children: JT, age 8; Noah, age 6; and Lily, age 3. Family activities often take place at a hockey rink, sports fields, or the golf course, where she enjoys the company of her husband, John. Passionate about youth development, Mrs. Taranto actively coaches her children's sports teams, fostering their athletic skills and teamwork. In addition to her coaching, she has a keen interest in historical fiction and enjoys baking a variety of treats with her family, making the most of the winter season together.
“To the students and families of Otto Shortell Middle School, I am here to listen, learn, and lead with purpose. My door is always open, and I believe in working as a team to ensure every child feels safe, supported, and successful. Together, we will create a school environment where every student can thrive and reach their fullest potential."
Welcome to Oneida City School District, Mrs. Taranto!
