Celebrating School Social Worker, Stephanie Thompson

Meet Stephanie Thompson, School Social Worker at Oneida City School District.
Stephanie Thompson is a dedicated School Social Worker at Oneida City School District. A native of Verona, she pursued her education at SUNY Fredonia in Western New York, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Psychology. She then returned to Central New York to obtain her Master’s in Social Work from Syracuse University.
Following her graduation, Stephanie began her career as a therapist with Liberty Resources and later served at Madison County Mental Health, where she had previously completed her internship. She eventually transitioned into her current role as a School Social Worker with Oneida City School District.
Stephanie describes the critical role of School Social Workers, stating,
"School Social Workers play an important role in supporting students’ emotional well-being. School Social Workers are the only Licensed Mental Health providers in the schools, and we aim to help students navigate mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and other social-emotional difficulties. We aim to foster a supportive school community, advocate for students and their families, and collaborate with educators to help our students thrive."
Stephanie finds immense fulfillment in witnessing her students' successes.
"Being able to see students’ success is the most rewarding part of the job. When a student comes to be, and shares that they tried a coping strategy that worked and the student felt less anxiety, this is not only a success for the student who overcame a difficult challenge, but also success for myself to assist students through overcoming challenges to help them to be more successful."
She deeply values her role as a School Social Worker.
"I appreciate the opportunity to be a steady and supportive presence in students' school day. Whether it is helping a child feel seen and heard, providing tools for emotional regulation, or advocating for resources for students, I aim to make a difference in student's lives. I value witnessing small but meaningful moments when a student gains confidence, uses a coping skill, or feels safe enough to open up. I also appreciate the ability to collaborate with the amazing educators and staff that we have at the Oneida School District."
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Stephanie enjoys traveling, hiking, playing tennis, and spending quality time with her family and friends.
