Music in Our Schools Month: Celebrating Our Music Department

This March marks the 40th anniversary of Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM), a time to honor the dedication of our exceptional music educators within the Oneida City School District (OCSD).
MIOSM, initiated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), is a nationally recognized celebration emphasizing the vital role of music in our educational system.
Heather O'Connell, a music teacher at OHS, shares, "Music education is essential because it nurtures creativity, discipline, and emotional expression. It helps students develop critical thinking skills, enhances their ability to collaborate, and strengthens their focus and perseverance. Beyond the academic benefits, music provides a unique outlet for self-expression, boosting confidence and fostering a sense of achievement. It also teaches valuable life skills like teamwork, time management, and empathy. Investing in music education not only gives the students a place to 'belong' and be uniquely themselves, it also offers all students a well-rounded foundation for both personal growth and future success."
Stephanie Gwilt, a music teacher at OSMS, adds, "I have been involved in music here in Oneida nearly my entire life. Music continues to bring me a deep joy and connection to the human experience, both in my teaching and in my personal life. I have made countless friends, amazing memories, and experienced moments of indescribable beauty. Passing that love of music on to my students and the Oneida community is my life's passion."
Nicole Winegard, a music teacher at DV and SS says, "Music is so essential to our students' growth, both academically and personally. One of my favorite parts of working with elementary students is seeing their love of music grow as they begin to grow up themselves. I get to see students learn to read music, join chorus, begin a new instrument, and learn how truly impactful music is. We are incredibly lucky to have such a great faculty and support system here at Oneida, where music can continue to touch students' hearts."
Our sincere gratitude goes out to all our Music Educators at OCSD:
